Junk
Shillington College | Handmade Project
For this brief I chose to create a book cover for the book Junk by Melvin Burgess using melted crayons.
Junk tells the story of two teens who run away from home and get caught up in a world of heroin and crime.
The concept behind this design was based on the themes of degradation and lost youth. I chose to use layers of melted crayon to communicate the innocence of the protagonists through the use of bright colour and a childish media. It reflects a key scene in the book where the protagonists draw on the wall of their squat with crayon to try and make it feel like a home, a perfect symbol for their unreadiness for the life that awaits them. The texture from the melted wax shows how their purity is corrupted and melts away to bring out a much darker side of themselves.
